Identity Change To Create A True Transformation

There’s more to just the process and outcome to achieving anything in life. There’s a change in identity and I will explain how you can change this instantly.

Let’s get real here. Most people know what they need to change in some way but they never do or they fail miserably.

What is it that continues to draw us into this continuous cycle of putting things off and never achieving our full potential?

Is it just our habits and outcomes we need to look at, or is there something else that lies deep within us?

First, let’s look at the power of our habits.

We create a set of habits (things that we do without thinking about – it’s an automatic action) with the intention of rewarding ourselves with something that has short-term gain and rarely think about playing the long game.

These habits, regardless of how small they are, amount up to a set of outcomes in the long-term. For example, if you continue to over-indulge on a daily basis, you guessed it… you’ll gain weight in the long run. But the first intention was instant satisfaction.

Or if someone changes their habits to more positive ones, eventually this will lead to great success but then sometimes there’s a price to pay…

What I like to call: ‘The Yo-Yo Effect’.

The Yo-Yo Effect basically means that you go back to your old ways once you have reached the final outcome.

So what needs to occur for long-term success to take place?

From my coaching experience and reading countless books, it links to our inner belief system or another phrase I like to refer to is, ‘our identity’.

Before we move on, let’s look at two more examples…

Example 1 :

Say a person loses 10 pounds in 2 months through making positive changes to their lifestyle (which is amazing by the way), but their inner belief system / identity states that they’re not worthy enough to have this and therefore fall back to their old habits and end back to square one. This is also due to the fact that they have set an end outcome which gives the person permission to now enjoy something that’s not been on the plan for the last 2 months. Remember, everything in balance.

Example 2 :

Have you also noticed this when it comes to finances? You know that day where you get your pay cheque or you’ve just closed that last sale? Our old identity says we can’t have this so we blow it on the things that only brings us short-term fulfilment like going out, buying clothes, booking a holiday, etc. I’ve personally done this a number of times!

Going back to the question of what needs to happen for long-term success, it’s simple… a change in identity – that can be done instantly!

I share with you my top three tips to achieve ever-lasting results.

Tip 1 : Create A New Identity

Act as though you already have it. That you’ve already achieved it. This will not only align your habits with your outcome, it will also make you think about the action you are about to take. Is it going to take you one step closer to your goals, or one step further away?

So, going back to the above example (the person losing 10 pounds in 2 months), this person’s old identity is tied to the following set of beliefs, or similar to:

“I’m always going to look like this.”

“I’m lazy.”

“I’m tired all the time due to lack of sleep.”

“I never have any free time.”

The new belief system that this person has created should be:

“I’m an athlete in my own right because I’m going to the gym.”

“I have an abundance of energy.”

“Good quality sleep allows me to perform at my best.”

“Because I have more energy, I now have more time.”

This simple trick changes your identity instantly. So every new habit you now take is aligned to your outcome.

Remember, your internal thoughts reflect your external words, actions and results.

A new perspective shift from your old one will allow you to deal with scenarios just like this one:

What do you do when you’re stressed? “Ohh I know, I’ll reach for a snack, a beer, put on the TV”. Look, if you don’t bring awareness to your actions, an accumulation of these actions overtime will lead to a downward spiral.

However, with your new identity, your new perspective, your new set of beliefs, when you get stressed, instead you’re more likely to go for a walk, listen to some jazz music (my personal favourite), meditate, go to the gym or choose a habit that you know is the right one.

Straight away you’ve not only just eliminated the self-sabotage part but have also taken considerable action to your outcome. Well done!

Which brings me onto my next tip.

Tip 2 : Get Clarity On Your Journey

Write a strategy to take you and your new identity along the path to achieve your outcome. This will give you clarity and discipline, so anything you know deep down that doesn’t align with your actions and outcomes, you’re more than likely not to do them and will stick to your path.

Tip 3 : Find Balance & Enjoyment

I’ve always said that life’s about living, finding balance, enjoying and embracing as many wonderful moments as possible.

Enjoy the process of this change. It won’t be easy at first, but the trick is to make it as simple as possible for yourself and believe me, you’ll regain a completely new sight on what can be achieved.

Summary

So, I challenge you to embrace your new identity and your new life purpose.

Remember this:

“Having a bad day whilst being on your purpose in life, for sure beats a day when you’re not on your purpose.”

Guess what?

Most people won’t change, because they’re used to the same old belief patterns and getting average results.

But if you’re one of those people reading this who wants to change, then my effort, time and energy that goes into writing these article has made it worthwhile.
