I’m going to share with you my number 1 tip to conquer any negative actions that you are subconsciously taking.
If you’ve read my other articles, you’ll know something about me, I suffered a lot with OCD and anxiety growing up. From past experiences, working with clients helping them achieve their dream body and mindsets, I’ve understood on a deeper level peoples behaviour patterns when it comes to taking action.
I came to the conclusion that you can change any habit, outcome and even reduce worry, stress and anxiety through this one skill I’m about to share with you.
Before I move on, I want you to become fully aware that what I’m about to share with you is purely from experience, knowledge and research.
We as humans have on average 60 thousand thoughts per day, some may be thoughts about the past, the future, what you have to do next, etc. This takes us away from the present moment. A lot of thoughts make us take subconscious action whether it’s going to allow us to thrive or take a step back in life.
Let me explain through my past experiences, when I had OCD, something would trigger a thought, which would then create an emotion (a feeling of anxiety, increased heart rate, sweating) and in order for me to return to ‘baseline’ I would need to act on this thought/emotion. My action would be numerous of things, like washing my hands over and over again (now I see everyone doing it lol), or flicking the light switches on and off a certain amount of times. Yes this used to happen a lot, I think my neighbours thought I was mad, the list could go on. To sum this up, a thought is triggered, which creates an emotion, which then leads to an action.
How does this relate to you and your lifestyle?
Let’s say you’re working on a fitness goal, which a major part of this would be nutrition. If you had a thought that was triggered by something, it would eventually lead to an action. For example, let’s say you left the biscuit tin permanently on the kitchen surface, knowing that your favourite snack is in there. Every time you walked past this in a non-fed state, the trigger would be the biscuit tin, the thought would be I need to eat, the emotion would be a craving/desire for the snack and the action would be to delve into the tin! This is known as subconscious action, we’re not actually aware of what we’re doing and could lead to not achieving your fitness goals.
Wait Conor, this sounds just like me but how do I avoid it?
Firstly, you should be making your bad habits harder, and your good habits easier (thanks to James Clear – author of Atomic Habits for this game changing tip). Secondly, the key is to bring awareness straight to the emotion as soon as it arrives. This is linked to more body awareness and being more sensitive to emotions. No guys, being more sensitive doesn’t make you ‘less alpha’, it actually takes great strength from within to be in control of your emotions.
Once you understand and bring awareness to the emotion, you can accept that it’s there and you become more in ‘tune’ with the action you’re likely to take.
To summarise, with most thoughts, it tends to lead to an action. The key here is to acknowledge the emotion to allow you to be in full control of the appropriate action required, aligned to your goals.
This is how I mastered my OCD. I could have gone through my whole life up to now suffering with internal pain but I decided to take action, conquer my mind, habits, thoughts, emotions and actions. It didn’t just happen overnight, good things come to those that take daily action and persevere with the process.
